A camera system in which film is replaced by a CCD (charge-couple device) array that records the image electronically. Apart from speed of playback and no need for processing, one of the great advantages of a digital camera is that the image can be processed in a computer, retouched, manipulated transmitted anywhere in the world via a modem.
